This humpback breached over and over for an hour. Weighing thirty to forty tons, it is amazing that they can launch themselves out of the water even once, much less 40 to 50 times...
This shot earned the Grand Prize in the 2018 California Wildlife Photo of the Year Contest. It was displayed in the California State Capitol and is featured in the January-February 2019 edition of CDFW's Outdoor California Magazine.
It was chosen as Shutterbug Magazine's Photo of the Day 2/25/19
It was also chosen to be used as the poster photo for Whalefest Monterey.
It was chosen by the National Wildlife Federation to have a place in their exhibit at the American Association for the Advancement of Science. It will hang in an interior gallery, featured with 19 photographs of animals that suggest some of the challenges and successes of wildlife conservation.
This photo was also published in a conservation article in the June/July 2020 issue of National Wildlife Magazine.
